Lighting is a critically important element to consider when illuminating a wine cellar.

Switch Lighting Multi-Lightz illuminate the stairs

Descending the timber trimmed stairway, a surprise is tucked down below.

This beautifully, rich toned space at a Waiheke private residence utilises the cool, below ground space for an elegant wine cellar.

Ultimately to preserve wine in its optimum condition, the best light is no light at all.

The worst type of lighting for a wine cellar is sun light, followed by fluorescent, incandescent, and halogen lights.

Wine ages when exposed to harsh light and heat. Fluorescent light is unsightly and emits significant amounts of ultraviolet light waves. Incandescent and halogen bulbs create light through heat, about 90% of the energy used is wasted to generate heat, which is intolerable for a precious wine collection.

But light is required in this naturally dark space. LED lights are the best choice for wine cellars. They do not emit UV light, and the amount of heat they emit is minimal.

Using a warm colour temperature Switch Lighting Zela Tilt luminaire, resulted in a space that gently illuminates the rich textured walls, while effectively illuminating the wine racks, and indirectly reflecting light back into the cellar space.

It is highly recommended to have the lighting on a sensor, to ensure the wine cellar returns to darkness once the occupants have left the room.

This Mediterranean-inspired property on Waiheke Island exudes elegance and timeless style, elevated with the perfect balance created with architectural lighting.

With Switch Lighting’s expertise in lighting design for luxury homes, we understand the importance of finding that balance between functionality and elegance.

Professional Reviews

“Redbox Architects Ltd have worked with Switch Lighting on two recent projects. The most recent was my own new family home in Monaco, Nelson. The lighting was seen as a key element of the design, and was used to accentuate the architecture. We wanted light fittings that were a real feature as well as being energy efficient. The LED lights designed and supplied by Switch Lighting are well designed and excellent quality. I was impressed with the light output and also knowing that the lamps will last 50,000 hours. We will use Switch Lighting for future projects and would recommend them to others.”
