Charred Larch Beauty

This project came about through necessity. An existing New Zealand cottage-style property, built in 2006 by Glen Cayless, needed to be extended to accommodate the growing family. Meeting with Robbie Dick of The Habitat Design Company, Glen discussed his vision for the extension. Exterior finish was a given - Japanese Charred Larch or 'Shou Sugi Ban'. This is an ancient Japanese process of charring the larch and sealing it for future protection against the elements. A cantilevered bed with Haro Endgrain flooring underneath lit by low level LED lighting accentuates the slab of Black Oak the adorns the floating headboard.

Working closely with Steve Leathwick from Coronet Woodware they created beautiful Shou Sugi Ban interior joinery for the robe, en suite and dresser, which fits cleverly into the rear of the headboard. Dave Slee from Select Electrical advised Glen closely on the lighting to use due to the height and rake of the ceiling. The Jewel in the Crown is the Arc Freestanding Bath from Plumbline in the main bedroom, with a view of either The Remarkables or Cecil Peak, depending on which end you choose.

Glen is very happy with everyone's work. Thank you.
