Pleasure By The Pool banner

Swimming Pool Extension

"Pleasure by the pool!" Was the design brief from our clients. Atop Oraka Estate, Queenstown, this stunning luxury home needed something more to make it an all-year-round pleasure. The original architect, Haden Emslie, of Haden Emslie Architecture, Christchurch, was contacted to bring this swimming pool area to life and with the experience of Glen Cayless of GS Cayless Construction Ltd, the pool sits seamlessly against the original setting and blends into the stunning surrounding landscape that is Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables.

Our clients wanted a place to enjoy swimming all year round with their family and friends. They wanted a heated swimming pool with surrounding decking wide enough to comfortably fit seating, hammocks, shower areas, a sunken seating area and to incorporate their spa area. Using an existing room, they also wanted an opulent cocktail bar to allow smooth transition from the house to the pool area.

Having recently completed the client's Art Studio, which you can view on our home page, it was a seamless flow to incorporate the Garapa into the decking around the pool.  Glen has a longstanding relationship with Rosenfeld Kidson and they managed to source crown and broadwalk lengths that were stored until required.

Our team at GS Cayless Construction found this build an interesting one. It is different to our architectural builds and allowed our builders on site to experience something totally new. Watching the swimming pool develop was a pleasure for both our clients and our staff.

We contacted Wes Fiebig from Mayfair Pools, Cromwell, with the design brief of a pool that is ample enough to take their family and friends but does not overtake their garden. Working closely with Glen Cayless, the builder, he designed it and his team installed the 96m² Mediterranean Blue heated pool. It comes with a slatted retractable polycarbonate clear blue cover hidden under the decking at the 1.8m deep end of the pool. Our clients asked for a naked chlorination filtration system from Austral. The pool is heated by two 17kW heat pumps.

It is fair to say that our clients get visits from their family more than ever now!

Creating some shade for the pool seemed impossible without detracting from the breathtaking lake and mountain views - so a solution was created by Shotover Engineering, Frankton, and Glen Cayless. Mike Mead and Glen Cayless designed a steel structure that would cantilever over the pool and offer some shade against the harsh Queenstown summer sun. In collaboration with Rhys Agnes of LouvreTec, two motorised retract louvre units were installed on the cantilever - ergo gaining full use of sun when required and blocking it our when not.

We used Select Electrical to complete all the required upgrades on the electrical supply of the property to deal with the new pool and Open Inc worked closely with Dave Slee to make the lighting, sound system and power automated.
