Our clients approached us to explore several house layouts that addressed their brief while enhancing it through careful consideration of a number of items. Our clients were presented with several early-stage concept designs that described aspects of the built form, relationships between different spaces, and outward views from within these spaces.

Inspired by light-filled homes with strong connections with their surrounding gardens, the Fairway House takes a cue from its golf course surrounds. The house is expressed with a distinctive skillion roof shape, with highlight windows for excellent access to North light, and deep eaves that aid in protection from the harsh summer sun. The ground floor embraces generous living and dining areas adjoining an alfresco courtyard and expansive views outwards to the manicured gardens and the fairway beyond. Our clients had a keen interest in an elevated podium floor look with sliding doors that enabled the home to be opened to the landscape beyond; a feature that they enjoyed in their previous homes.

Taking advantage of the views of the golf course was of high priority also. The large sliding doors to both ends of the Living Room and the Kitchen allow for views directly out to the tees, while the introduction of high-level windows further emphasizes the view of the extensive tree canopy surrounding the fairways.

The heart of the home

The entry of the home is punctuated by a stone feature wall that extends into the kitchen. Here, the kitchen forms the heart of the home, with a generous island bench and a slimline pendant light that highlights the length of the room. A separate coffee nook/bar allows drinks to be prepared without disturbing someone preparing meals in the Kitchen. The Bar Pod also acts as a barrier between the main open plan living and the theatre. The colours in this space harmoniously work to complement the cool grey and tawny tones of the feature stone. With direct access to the alfresco, dining and living areas, the kitchen bridges the more private spaces such as the main suite, secondary bedroom wings, a separate sitting room and a theatre. An operable roof to the Alfresco allows solar control for quality light in winter and protection from harsh sun in summer.

Short-stays

The secondary bedrooms have been designed with the ability to be closed off from the rest of the house and used as short-term accommodation for visiting guests. While these rooms were located to the south side of the home, they continue to have access to quality north light with the addition of a skillion roof design. These spaces are designed to be easily separated through the locking of individual doors that can configure limited access to bedroom wings, to the kitchenette or even the inclusion of the theatre room.
