Nestled in amongst a street lined with well-preserved red brick Federation era houses, Gable Clerestory House presents a quiet and homogenous frontage to the street. Beyond the street facade, however, one is greeted by a family home with dynamic ceiling heights, delightful sky views, and an earthy palette.
The varying ceiling heights from the old to the new is the essence of this home. The original tall ceiling curves downward into a compressed threshold revealing the new spacious living space. Taking inspiration from mid-century architecture, a clearly expressed datum line marks the ceiling in the living space and atop sits the gable roof. A set of clerestory windows cap the ends, framing a ‘Turrel-esque’ sky view, bringing in abundant light and heating the space with warm winter sun during colder months. A curation of select terrazzos and earthy colours - clay, green, and grey - creates a focal point in the interiors. Soft greys, earthy tone of concrete, timber, and external galvanised iron balance against the vibrant colours and the salvaged heritage bricks.
Gable Clerestory House is a voluminous bright home and respectful of its context.
