  • The building structure was kept lightweight so that we didn’t need to invest too much into the foundations on the technical site
  • Symmetrical setout of the buildings form and glazing aided the low cost
  • The aesthetic is an interpretation of the “Christchurch Style” that has been devastated by the earthquakes, using lightweight flexible materials. Forms are framed in black, with the structure also being expressed through the black frame. Panels of glazing and cladding are symmetrical and focus on their proportions.
  • The exterior materials are able to weather without maintenance in a tenancy situation, and will still maintain their beauty and architectural contrast
  • Interior layouts were kept simple and uncluttered, maximising the useable floor area, and focusing on the outdoor courtyards
  • Full height expansive glazing, and a neutral palette aim to make the spaces feel larger than they are

DESIGN BRIEF

  • 4x 2 bedroom apartments
  • Centrally located carports and storage

Young Architects is a New Zealand based design studio. Established in 2003 by Greg Young, their work is predominantly homes in the coastal hills of Christchurch, but they also work throughout the South Pacific, and further afield in North America and Asia.

Young Architects focus is on designing buildings that are appropriate for their environment, have a classic aesthetic, and are cost effective to construct. Preferred mediums are natural palettes, predominantly in timber.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
