By Perry Mills & Associates Landscape Architects
This new community facility comprised a library, meeting rooms, hall and offices, but with opening day looming the external areas were a long way from being presentable.
We were appointed to prepare plans for completion of the external areas, and after a site inspection and consultation with the Council parks staff to establish what resources were available, we proposed a landscape solution featuring local indigenous plants and materials.
Local tussock grasses and lilies characteristic of the Western Plains landscape were used complementing vertical timber columns along timber boardwalks along the street frontage.
Highly drought tolerant silver foliaged saltbushes provide robust plant massing, and freely-available local volcanic rocks were used as paving stones creating a cobbled effect at the edge of garden beds to manage pedestrian damage.
The facility opened ontime and the landscaping has proven a durable and effective solution.
