Hanover Garden Room

Hanover Cottage: A thoughtful adaption of a circa 1836 heritage listed Battery Point cottage. Responding to complex heritage, site and extant fabric constraints, the new additions sensitively weave into the existing building. Enhancing connection to garden, improving the liveability of the family home, whilst celebrating the history of the place. Nestled within nipaluna/Hobart’s historic Battery Point, Hanover Cottage has evolved to accommodate a growing multi-generational family while respecting its rich heritage. The project enhances connectivity between the home and garden, integrating seamlessly with the existing structure while remaining visually distinct. A reimagined garden room replaces a previous sunroom, preserving its light-filled warmth while introducing a crisp, low-lying form with operable edges that dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors. This new space functions as a dynamic hub—blurring spatial divisions, enhancing family interactions, and maximizing functionality within a minimal footprint. Sustainability and resourcefulness guided the design, with repurposed bricks and decking reinforcing the home’s layered history. Close collaboration between architects, builders, and craftsmen ensured a refined yet robust outcome, balancing contemporary needs with heritage sensitivity. The result is a space that embraces warmth, light, and connection—both to the past and to the garden—while fostering a flexible, lived-in environment that will continue to adapt with the family’s evolving needs.
