This simple barn form, well suited to its rural setting, has planty of four-legged admirers. All photography is by David Straight.
The east and north-facing elevations of Karangahake House, sitting within its farm setting. The owners plan to restore at least 11 acres of the property into native bush.
The south-western gable end hosts the lounge area, leading out onto a verandah that traverses the length of the building facing west.
The outdoor room in the southern end of the building provides an interstitial space between the main house (left) and the guest bedroom/office (right).
Abodo weatherboard has a finish that retains its silvery appearance throughout its lifetime.
Large doors provide enclosure as well as sliding open to provide views and ventilation.
The remote rural location overlooking native forest is the perfect environment for a naked two year old to freely run around.
A sunny view of bush-clad hills from the timber-clad outdoor room.
The timber cladding continues into the outdoor room, which is flooded with light through a polycarbonate roof.
The firewood stack is kept dry and handy to reach.
The family pooch guards the entrance to the corridor that leads to the main living areas.
Two bedrooms and a bathroom lead of the corridor.
Plywood lines the interior spaces, providing a warm backdrop for vintage furntiture.
The rural view from the kitchen island. The double-glazed windows utilise Euro-style tilt-and-pivot joinery that is thermally broken to prevent cold bridging.
An all-black kitchen provides a strong contrast against the light timbers.
The stainless steel benchtop is a durable low-maintenance work surface in the kitchen.
The family are bilingual and wanted a versatile ‘marae-style area that could be used for guests to sleep, as a study or a play space; seen here in the mezzanine level.
The southern gable end of the main living area lit up at dusk.
The polycarbonate section of roof light up like a lantern at night.
