Welcome to Lavally View House, a captivating architectural endeavour realised through a close collaboration between our design team and a visionary client deeply committed to a unique design concept. Overcoming challenges posed by a compact site, limited budget, and design guidelines within the Narara Ecovillage, this project stands as a testament to ingenuity, sustainability, and a profound connection to nature.
This 4-bedroom home is a showcase of meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering dedication. The design narrative unfolds in two stages, each contributing to the home's distinctive character. In Stage 1, the east-west rectilinear volume of the upper level takes shape with a modest street frontage. The external SITUP straw panel walls, clad in spotted gum on the south and a bright orange lime render to the north, sit on an exposed suspended concrete slab. Internally, pressed straw Durra Panels form the walls, creating a warm and inviting space. Large windows in the north-facing bedrooms and entertainment area offer breathtaking views of the surrounding forested valley, connected by a central hallway with strategically placed reading nooks for cross ventilation.
Stage 2 introduces a captivating circular form for the lower level, featuring walls made of Mudtec compressed earth bricks supporting recycled hardwood timber rafters and an earthen roof. The upper-level bedrooms enjoy access to a green roof, providing a verdant veranda experience. The curved design embraces the living spaces, drawing attention to the picturesque hills across the valley.
An open plan living, dining, and kitchen space defines the heart of Lavally View House, subtly separated from the master bedroom suite by a striking rammed earth feature wall. This wall, extending into the walk-in pantry, not only adds a touch of visual interest but also functions as thermal mass, ensuring a stable temperature for storing food sourced directly from the terraced food gardens that connect the various levels of the home.
The project stands as a wonderful example of regenerative design philosophy, proudly incorporating repurposed and recycled materials, natural elements, and healthy finishes. Lavally View House is more than a residence; it is a celebration of sustainable architecture, demonstrating a profound connection to nature at every turn.

Integrated Biotecture Design was founded with a desire to create healthy, sustainable buildings that connect with the environment, allowing both the occupants and the environment to flourish. Having had the pleasure to work hands-on with natural materials, practice permaculture and a strong interest in building science, we firmly believe wholistic design is the ultimate path to sustainability. With this we aim to create enduring sustainable architecture through biophilic design, the use of natural, healthy materials and those that have a low carbon footprint.
