Maroubra House was a new construction with an interesting client brief to create a robust concrete house in a Sydney beachside suburb. The project created a new 5-bedroom large family home over 250 sqm with a vision to withstand time and use, ensuring the house would perform well beyond the initial owner’s occupation. The energy efficiency of the dwelling was also an integral design factor whilst developing an aesthetic aligning with the client’s desires for a family home. The strong presence of exposed precast concrete panel construction directed the interior aesthetic, complimented with warm timbers and steel accents to curate a robust and minimal scheme. An idyllic feature of this project is the pool positioned below the back deck, enabling a uniquely functional exterior space perfect for entertaining all year round. The pivotal decking plane lifts to reveal the swimming pool below, exemplifying the dynamic capabilities of the residence.

Architectural passive design strategies intended to minimise energy consumption were widely implemented at Maroubra House. The 270mm thick pre-cast concrete sandwich panels with a built-in layer of insulation provide a thermal mass blanket to insulate and regulate temperature fluctuations. Maximising solar gain, particularly in the living areas, warms the high thermal mass materials and cross ventilation through all spaces captures the cooling breezes to naturally ventilate the dwelling. A solar chimney effect through the internal void connecting all three stories cools the house down by hot air release through automatic louvres with thermal sensors capping the void. Solar panels with battery storage cover 80-90% of the house power requirements, running the underfloor heating and other services along with a car charging station in the garage. Ceiling fans circulate air within the residence instead of an A/C system and recycled rainwater stored in tanks is re-used for the toilets and in the gardens. The performance and aesthetic longevity of the distinct concrete façade at Maroubra House is ensured by a photocatalyst sealant that decomposes surface dirt and pollutants to warrant self-cleaning properties and air purifying.
