Canopy were asked to create a garden for a new house overlooking the Waimea Inlet, a large semi-enclosed estuary near Tasman. A prime objective was the creation of outdoor living areas that were sheltered from sea winds but would still allow enjoyment of the beautiful scenery.

The clients existing sloping section required flat usable spaces including a lawn terrace as well as outdoor living areas. It was also important to create privacy from the road and a sense of arrival so that visitors coming to the house would be clearly directed to the front door. In response to this brief Canopy came up with a design concept based on the idea of the landscape reflecting the architectural style of the house and the wider site.

Clean and contemporary in design with a simple structured approach to planting using grids of flowering cherries and hedges and a mix of native plants on the seaward side of the garden to connect it to the wider coastal environment around the site. Timber decks were built on two sides of the house along with timber and concrete steps to connect the various areas of the garden. The main outdoor living area, connected to the northern end of the house is an elegant steel pergola with timber rafters complete with an outdoor fireplace, barbecue and integrated outdoor fridge.

About the
Professional

At Canopy, we like to get a sense of fulfilment from our jobs. This happens when clients feel passionately about what they are trying to create. It is our job to listen to turn ideas and visions into something real, contributing with the knowledge of all things landscape that we have learned through the years.

There are many layers of depth to landscape architecture. From creating the picturesque, the formal and functional through to enriching the ecology of the land and providing better connections. There is also aiding in the interpretation of cultural landscapes and creating memorable spaces that may become culturally significant.

Our aim at Canopy is to add as much depth and meaning to the landscape and given the opportunity, that is what we will do.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
