The clients requested a “smarter”, more efficient kitchen with flexibility of use, depending on whether it was just the two of them or a dinner party. An island bench was designed set on lockable chunky wheels providing various configuration options when entertaining. To keep it lightweight, an acrylic bench-top was specified, while its custom, slightly random shiplap skin echoes the home’s exterior cladding.

Here the island is shifted to below the leadlight window so the entire room can be utilised for dining or living. Perfect for the large gatherings of friends and families in such a compact efficient cottage.
With a low Kauri ceiling forming the floor above, cabinetry and flooring is kept light to give the kitchen the aspired open and bright feel.
To keep the island bench lightweight, an acrylic bench top with a honeycomb substrate was specified. While its custom slightly random shiplap skin echoes the home’s exterior cladding.
Storage space was maximized wherever possible, with easy accessibility to stored items. Toni optimized storage space by adding secret toe kick drawers under the joinery.
Pet bowls are especially accommodated by hanging the cabinetry from the wall slightly higher, allowing room for their cat’s head and in an area where the humans don’t kick the water bowl on passing.
