A modern coastal renovation and extension of Newman House, featuring an open-plan kitchen and dining area, individual bedrooms for children, and a seamless connection to the outdoors, all designed to create a warm and welcoming family environment.

Scope of Work: Renovation and extension to add more space, including a new kitchen, lounge, dining area, and guest bathroom downstairs. The existing spaces were converted into additional bedrooms for the children and a study. Elm and Ember selected all materials, fixtures, fittings, flooring, feature lighting, completed the electrical layout, and designed the window furnishings.

Design Style: Modern Coastal – Sophisticated and cool, featuring greys and blues, and warmed with engineered timber flooring.

Key Features:

  • Large open-plan kitchen and dining area
  • Stacker doors opening onto the deck with stunning landscape views

Challenges and Solutions: One significant challenge was relocating the plumbing and waste points, which required redesigning and flipping the kitchen layout to accommodate the changes. Another challenge was ensuring minimal disruption for the family, who stayed in the home during the renovation. Close collaboration with the builder was essential to manage the construction process smoothly and efficiently.

Client's Vision and Needs: The Newman family had outgrown their current space, and with teenage children, they needed to expand their home to provide individual rooms and more personal space. They envisioned a house where each child had their own room and space to entertain friends without disturbing the rest of the family. Additionally, the design needed to create a warm, welcoming, and relaxing atmosphere for the entire family to enjoy.

Process and Collaboration: The initial meeting took place at the client's residence to gather the brief and understand their current living circumstances. This walkthrough provided insights into the family's needs and frustrations. The clients shared numerous inspirational images, guiding the creation of mood boards and digital renderings. Once the clients approved the designs, detailed joinery plans were completed. Continuous collaboration with contractors ensured that the project progressed smoothly from concept to completion.

Final Outcome: The final design resulted in a thoughtfully planned and spacious home, providing individual rooms for all the children and ample space for entertaining friends. The open-plan kitchen and dining area, enhanced by stacker doors opening onto the deck, created a seamless connection with the landscape. The family appreciated the warm, welcoming, and relaxing environment, which met their needs and exceeded their expectations.
