Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub banner

The Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub is located in the southwest of Christchurch and is a premier regional outdoor sports facility designed by Beca in association with 106 Architects.  The sports hub replaces the facilities lost due to the 2011 earthquakes and includes;

An international standard 9 lane artificial running track with grass warm-up track, 2 Global Elite water based hockey turfs specifically designed to accommodate Pro-League internationally broadcast hockey games, 12 outdoor tennis courts capable of hosting Davis Cup games, 2 sand based rugby league fields and 2 community grass fields.

Designed With Strength In Mind:
The jewel in the crown is the centrally located Sports Hub building.  The design team specified Metalcraft Kāhu® metal roofing and cladding in the colour Ironsand to provide a cohesive look for all the buildings in the Sport Hub.  Kāhu® is the modern corrugate that can be dressed up or down to suit the building’s function.  The utilitarian Pump Shed and Storage Shed are completely clad in Kāhu®, while the Public Amenities and Change Village use a combination of Kāhu® and exposed concrete block.  The Sports Hub building at the centre of the site uses Kāhu® on the roof only, with full height glazing and additional timber features in places to reflect its premier function and complete the visual hierarchy of buildings.

Success In Mind:
The Kāhu® profile also acknowledges the rural character of the site and its use by the adjoining A&P grounds, prior to the development of the sports hub.

When developing the master plan in 2013, the design team made allowance for the sports to grow and build additional playing surfaces in the future.

The success of the design of the sports hub was recently acknowledged at the 2019 New Zealand Recreational Awards, where it won the Outstanding Project Award.
