A new four bedroom home over four levels on an inner city site set behind the historic buildings of Bridge road Richmond. The interiors are confidently neutral and pared back, complimenting the bold and dramatic structure. This expansive home surprises at every turn.

The decisive brief required every square centimeter of the site to serve purpose. Over four levels; basement, ground, first and roof top, on only 142 square meters of land, the project was to deliver a flexible, light filled floorplan with a sense of drama and intrigue. Neighbouring properties on north and south boundaries required careful planning of lightwells and use of glass flooring to drop light into the basement and via the roof top into the first-floor bathroom. The ground floor shower room and powder room are linked, saving space and creating a wet area with versatile multifunctionality for guests. The open plan living space utilises the full width of the site, with an over-sized island bench for gathering and entertaining, a built-in dining bench seat and curved concrete plinth to anchor the audiovisual area whilst also functioning as the first steps to the first floor above. The palette is striking and confident yet muted and earthy with charred timber used internally, natural stone, concrete, brass and hand made tiles. Switchable glass windows to bathrooms provide natural light with the ability to manage privacy. A strong emphasis was placed on sourcing materials, fittings and fixtures from local artisans and craftspeople.

Out of the ordinary and unexpected, the building mimics the roof shapes of nearby historic dwellings whilst contributing a modern form and striking pared back palette. The interior design follows the lead established by the structure and its statement in form and place, clearly demonstrating that a large site is not necessary to create a light filled flexible home with space to both gather and retreat.
