Dunstan Halt was designed to be seen in the expansive Central Otago landscape but not intrude upon it.

We designed this house in 2008 for owners who wanted to live a largely self-sufficient lifestyle on their 20 ha farmlet but not forego comfort in a modern sustainably designed house.

Panoramic views from Dunstan Peak around to St Bathans and Hawkdun ranges demanded large windows, which fortunately coincided with the architect’s desire to heavily glaze the north face of the house for passive solar gain. The insulated concrete floor and large stone-faced chimney breast each trap the heat from the low-angle sun in winter for re-radiation on cold evenings. A dedicated double glazed sun space is brilliantly cosy on winter days and acts as a transparent extra thermal layer on the north facade of the living room at night. In summer, the sun space opens up as a verandah.

Sixteen PV panels provide solar electricity for use or storage in the battery bank. Being designed as part of the architecture, the raised PV array neatly fits the bedroom wing swamp totara pergola frame and does not break the flat roofline silhouette. This simple horizontality mimics the flat river terrace perfectly, as does the cladding in grey vertical corrugated steel reflecting the muted tones of the adjoining hills and of the scree slopes on distant Mt St Bathans.

Summer cooling is also taken care of naturally. The two bedroom, two bathroom sleeping wing is separated from the kitchen, dining , living, library and study wing by a slender glass breezeway which funnels a pleasant draught even on the hottest days and draws stale air from the house by venturi effect. The icing on the cake is the large artificial pond, fed from the water race, which provides welcome from the hot nor’westers.

Dunstan Halt proves you can live simply and well when the architecture is in tune with its environment.

Aonui Architecture is a New Zealand Institute of Architects registered practice with a principal who is a Registered Architect listed with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB). We were founded in 2003 by Richard Wright with the express purpose of providing architectural services that are focused on resilient design in general and low energy consumption, low carbon footprint building construction and smart building management systems in particular.

The practice now has a portfolio of completed sustainable design projects of all types throughout New Zealand and the Pacific and uses its accumulated data and experience to deliver increasingly efficient low-impact buildings for clients who have a shared commitment to smarter, warmer, drier, healthier accommodation being part of their future. We continue to work with the most enlightened and proactive consultants, manufacturers, suppliers and contractors to bring the goals of net zero energy consumption and carbon neutral building nearer to reality with every new completed project.

Our architecture seeks to capture the dreams of our clients, the spirit of their often enchanting sites and the joy of beautiful spaces in truly responsive buildings that will always be capable of nurturing and inspiring their occupants and owners.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
