The Tawarri Crescent Residence was one part of a larger development on a reconfigured lot & two detached dwelling. The largest constraint was trying to design a home that took advantage opening externally to it’s beautiful Burleigh Heads setting on what resulted in a 332sq.m site. The building form was pushed to the rear of the site to capitalise on the Northern aspect to the street & views to the Burleigh Ridgeline. The lower Ground Floor Plan was conceived as a permeable facade that wrapped a Northern yard courtyard with a pool set in lush landscaping, celebrating the context in which it was sited. Planning to the Ground Floor was programmed with all public zones of living, dining, kitchen & a flexible guest bed that could transition to a kid’s rumpus adjacent to the pool if needed. These public zones all wrap the central landscaped courtyard & external entertaining areas. The first floor was programmed with private zones of 3 additional bedrooms & a retreat, kids spill out zone.

The form of the building was that of a Contemporary Coastal character indicative of its’ Sub-Tropical setting. Large eave overhangs & oversized gutters with a flatter pitch hip roof & eaves boxed down to window heads indicative of Tropical Modernist Architecture. A defining element was the arched vertical batten aluminium screen acting as a skirt to the deck areas & extending as a balustrade over that act as a colonnade to thicken the façade & help with cooling interior living spaces. The transparency of the screen allows filtered light & cross ventilation to enter the internal spaces. The arched openings soften the form of the building & allow a visual to the landscaped courtyard from within. The screen also curves upon itself on the front façade defining the front entry. Double aluminium members to each side of the first floor windows continue the material palette to the upper level for a cohesive design. The complexity in the build has been the effortless nature that these finely articulated details have been executed.

The material palette overall consists of prominent natural looking elements, tones of timber and stone, as a reflection of the surrounding natural beauty of the adjacent Burleigh Headland & National Park. These materials & finer details have been continued internally in an effort to blur the line with the outside natural elements. Once again finely articulated details are carried internally with great craftsmanship.

We Are Habitat Studio Architects

Habitat Studio Architects is a progressive design based boutique architectural practice committed to providing our clients with quality design and professional service.

Habitat Studio Architects is a multi-disciplinary practice established in 2010 out of an urge for creative freedom to maintain a high level of design on projects that connect with & consider the environment in which they are sited. Each of our designs are a reflection of the unique character of the site, to create a ‘sense of place’ that responds to climate and the local context. Environmental sustainability of our architecture is part of the process rather than an option. We incorporate sustainable principles and appropriate material selection in all our designs relevant to the brief.

The collaborative nature of the studio allows great flexibility with a large range of project scales including high end residential and beach houses, multi-residential townhouses and units, mixed use commercial, hospitality, industrial, fit-outs & interiors. Habitat Studio is an Australian Institute of Architects A+ Practice with project locations spreading down the Eastern Coastline from Cairns, Airlie Beach, Gold Coast, Northern NSW, Newcastle, Melbourne & Internationally to Singapore & Papua New Guinea.
