The owners of this award winning Christchurch house wanted a modern, warm and inviting family home, which made the most of the sweeping ocean views around Pegasus Bay to the Kaikoura Ranges. Given that extremes in weather are the norm for the site, creating sheltered outdoor spaces that could be enjoyed year round, was a must.

Architect Glenn Brebner has created a series of intimate private spaces that unfold beautifully into the more open family and entertaining area at the centre of the home.

The location and weather tried its hardest to thwart builders, Right Angle Construction – rocks so hard they had to be blasted out; enough mud and water onsite that it needed to be pumped out, and an earthquake damaged access road (which was steep, narrow and windy to begin with) – made it not only a technically challenging build, but logistically challenging too.

However, once all these design and build challenges were dealt with, the resulting home was definitely worth the effort. From its dramatic cantilevered entrance canopy, hunkered into the hillside and clad in a cloak of cedar; past the floating ply feature wall and stunning polished concrete floor in the living area; through the large sliders and onto the fabulously sheltered deck and pool area – always framing those ocean views perfectly.

About the
Professional

Located in Christchurch, we are Registered Master Builders specialising in architectural work - both new builds and renovations.

Happy clients are our priority. If you are looking for a builder who will listen to your needs, and provide a tailor-made solution to meet your requirements, we think you've found the right angle.

Director Taf Barrie started the company in 2010. Since then he and his team have completed a variety of projects, from renovations to new builds, for both individual clients and larger commercial projects. We generally focus on local work, fitting with the company’s commitment to eco-conscious building practices.

Experienced in new architectural builds and hill work, we are also happy to look at your renovation project. Achieving your dream is our focus, and we are passionate about doing this - we offer a wide range of building and/or design services.

Taf Barrie

Taf qualified as a carpenter/joiner in the UK in 1984. He worked on the tools in Britain and Germany until leaving Europe in 1990. His travels led him to New Zealand, where he fell in love with the country and lifestyle.

A New Zealand resident for over twenty-five years, he has worked in the industry since arriving. Working as a foreman/site manager for over twenty years, he has never lost his love of carpentry. Testament to this is his reputation for achieving a quality finish, whilst providing a common sense approach to managing projects within budget.

Taf enjoys developing good relationships with clients, and the professionals, craftsmen and suppliers he works with - he has a good eye for design, combined with practical knowledge and a wealth of experience on how to best achieve the finished product.

Jenny Cunningham

Jenny runs the design consultancy and administration side of Right Angle. With twenty years of business management experience, Jenny keeps the off-site administration running smoothly, ensuring that Taf can focus on his area of expertise.

Having worked in a variety of design positions all her working life, Jenny’s design aesthetic has been augmented with practical building experience during the last twenty years. What started as a serendipitous transition into building design has become a passion, with Jenny having now completed a wide range of design projects - from small renovations and joinery design, through to complete house builds. What she most enjoys is the challenge of keeping within a client’s brief, whilst bringing something more to the table. As far as she’s concerned, the phrase “it’s exactly what we wanted, but we’d never have thought of it” is what successful design is all about.
