Te Puka O Te Waka / Rakiura Museum banner

Born out of necessity to provide a new purpose built facility to re-house the islands’ museum exhibition, the project began its incubation almost 10 years ago. As the first piece of civic infrastructure constructed on the Island in over 25 years, the project developed a rich narrative supported by its’ strong connection with the ocean, maritime history, local iwi, community and environment.

Doubling as a community and information centre, the museum provides a place for events, meetings, or large-scale conferences, and for visitors to come for practical information about the island. Designed with visitors in mind, at the front entrance concrete seats face the building, and lockers are provided for storing dirty tramping boots. A welcoming reception and information desk with a small shop greets those who venture inside, often seeking refuge from inclement weather and finding a world class exhibition inside.

Rakiura is a community that hosts thousands of tourists throughout the year. The museum provides a stunning place for these guests, both international and domestic, to learn, explore and connect with the island’s rich and complex history.

About the
Professional

Creating what matters for future generations is the philosophy that underpins our core values and how we approach our architectural commissions.

We have over 150 years of history as a public architecture practice. Our acquired knowledge and skills over this time are coupled with continual research and innovation. Coupled with our wide project experience we apply this in our design work to create efficient, resilient, sustainable solutions benefiting the communities across New Zealand.

Our history is embedded in our core values focusing on the public good and creating an enduring legacy. With this in mind we build our relationships allowing us to engage and collaborate closely with our clients. We explore with openness and transparency, to deliver the best solution with integrity and responsibility, and valuing the natural environment and resources.

We are proud of having contributed to developing the vertical and horizontal infrastructure and environments that our nation relies upon over the last 150 years history and we continue our vision to create what matters to future generations.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
