The Good Soul Cottage is a beautifully restored, heritage-listed (circa 1890) 2 bedroom cottage tucked away in the heart of Launceston. The fatigued cottage was purchased by Tasmanian designer-builder duo, and husband and wife- Lydia and Shane, with the intention of renovating it and converting it into a boutique getaway destination. The cottage is located in Invermay, the industrial heart of Launceston, and was a victim of the severe flooding in the region in 1929- resulting in a wonky exterior.

The duo wanted to restore as much of the home as possible, honouring it’s history. When first canvassing the property, plans were made to replicate the original wainscotting and restore the original timber floors. Despite the home’s unevenness, Lydia and Shane were optimistic and excited for the challenge.

Lydia and Shane’s Vision for the property included a modern, open-plan living area to gice the historical property a more contemporary feel. They removed the wall between the kitchen and living room and added double French doors perpendicular to the end of the hallway, giving a sense of depth and creating a connection to the backyard.

Timeless Design

The cottage’s contemporary styling is effortlessly blended with traditional design elements. The selected Copenhagen lever and Paddington knob are timeless designs, with flowing lines and character details. Paired with a contemporary brushed brass finish and on an understated backplate, the hardware honours the classic details yet feels distinctly modern.

Like the wood panelling and herringbone pattern of the floating floorboards, the Paddington knob reflects the traditional design elements of the home. The Copenhagen is a diverse lever and easily adapts to a contemporary styling, with its jewel-like facets adding a glamorous element to each space.

The brushed brass finish of our door furniture seamlessly ties in with the relaxed colour palette, adding pops of colour to the white and natural tones. The brass complements these neutral tones and contrasts against the stark white without overwhelming the space.
