University of Newcastle Shortland Entries banner

The project’s distinctive fly roofs echo the profile of the existing Shortland Union Building and redefine major pedestrian routes within the university.

Set amongst the natural bushland setting of the University of Newcastle, the project consists of a series of roof structures, linking pathways and landscaped outdoor seating areas. A moment of formality created by the design helps strengthens the link between key buildings in an otherwise unstructured campus environment

  • Location:University of Newcastle, Shortland Campus
  • Completion:2015

A robust and refined material palette was intentionally selected to compliment the surrounding bushland campus.

The Shortland Entries project for the University of Newcastle revitalises key points of activity within the existing Union Building and defines major pedestrian routes to improve connectivity. Dynamic fly roof forms and main entries to the Shortland Union are linked by covered walkway structures which combine minimal steel detailing with glass and timber. New landscaped areas complement the design of the structures and enhance the pragmatic requirements by way of seating and definition of space. Additional landscaped paths and low retaining walls provide clear circulation routes to assist the covered walkway structures in providing improved way-finding throughout the campus.
