Construction works in clinical healthcare environments for the new Surgical Assessment Unit at Level 8 of the Menzies Building located at Waikato Hospital Campus.


Scope works included:

Demolition and reconfiguration of Ward area (750m2 approx.) to form an Acute Surgical Assessment unit totaling approximately 95 cubic meters of demolition materials.

Supply and installation of Medical Bedhead service Panels; 

Installation of Medical gases reticulation ASVU and terminal outlets, amounting to 700 meters of copper medical gas pipework.

Full refurbishment and full redecoration of the ward.

Full upgrade of electrical services including lighting, DB’s Body Protected Areas, Nurse call systems and a total of 4.5 kilometres of electrical cable.

Refurbishment of bathrooms, plumbing/drainage; 

• Reconfiguration of Fire protection sprinkler/alarms to suit new layout; 

Installation of Passive Fire Protection (Fire doors); 

Supply and installation of cassette type A/C units; and there were only three spare beds available in the whole hospital the day this ward opened and the ward was already full when it was officially opened by Health Minister Dr. David Clark with a cutting of the red ribbon.


The revamp included a total of 26 new beds including a 10-bed surgical assessment unit and 16 short-stay beds for patients recovering after an operation. This totals 17% of the hospital's total of 154 beds.


Chief programmer Lue Shaw put together a detailed programme that accelerated the work schedule to meet hospital demands and the entire project was complete in 20 weeks.
