Welcome to Waka Huia. Designed by Pac Studio , and a recent winner of the 2026 Auckland Architecture Award in the Alterations and Additions category, this project set out to preserve the home’s authenticity, with our joinery chosen to feel like it belonged from the start. Kauri carries the line of the existing flooring through the home, while brass nods to the detailing of the villa era. Our work centred on the kitchen and laundry, including a custom brass island top, grain-matched wall panels, and a pivot door through to the laundry. The beauty of this project is in the details you don’t immediately see. The floating island, continuous grain, and cleanly resolved junctions all read as simple because of the planning behind them. “We used DBJ for our latest project building, our home. We were very definite that we wanted to have a metal kitchen and the whole interior design of the house was formed around our metal kitchen. However a metal kitchen wasn’t as easy to produce as the idea was. We worked with DBJ over several months to find a finish that they developed for us. The final result of an aged brass kitchen was exactly what we wanted. DBJ went out of their way to create a complicated bespoke kitchen. Their service was fabulous any issues that came up were rectified. It was a pleasure to work with DBJ.”
