Wellington International Airport banner

Travelling to or from Wellington by air is a unique and exciting experience, often made all the more exciting by our famous wind. The airport building provides an opportunity to create a welcoming threshold to the city. Our aim was to build an open and flexible environment which responds to the various emotions of the building users from the excitement of an imminent holiday, to travel anxiety, or the sadness of departure.

Built over an existing operating airport, this complex project required detailed developmental and construction planning and a collaborative approach across the project team. The airport sits on the Miramar peninsular link. This dramatic slice of land links Wellington’s harbour to the north with the wild south coast. The airport collects the wrath of the elements, and uses the strap-line ‘Wild at Heart’ to describe itself.

The main terminal provides a generous and welcoming space with a soaring ceiling and panoramic views of the runway and the city beyond. The inflected roof form references the movement of take-off and landing. The terminal provides a warm and inviting passenger hall which enhances the travel experience for Wellingtonians and their visitors whatever the weather outside.

CCM Architects is an award winning New Zealand design practice, driven by a commitment to creating architecture which contributes positively to the built environment and to the people it serves. We pursue value and quality in architecture; driven by the belief that our lives are directly influenced by our surroundings. It is not only the buildings we inhabit, but the spaces between the buildings, and their relationship to the natural environment that impact our wellbeing and our quality of life.

Established as Craig Craig Moller in 1969, CCM Architects have gained a reputation for successfully delivering complex projects whilst maintaining a design focus and placing importance on actively listening to the needs, wants and aspirations of our clients. We continue to work across a wide range of sectors and have developed particular expertise in healthcare, education, airport, heritage, masterplanning and community architecture.
