When designing your home, lighting is the unsung hero of the space – a piece of the puzzle that can create a beautiful ambience through warm whites or a neutral, open feel with cool whites.
BoscoLighting specialises in supplying LED lighting solutions. Based in Sydney and operating for 12 years, General Director Bosco Liang from BoscoLighting shares his tips on creating the perfect mood with linear extrusion lighting.
Before you choose your lighting products, determine the purpose of the space. The aim will influence what kind of lighting to have and the ambience you need. Is it a commercial space that requires bright lighting to highlight structure and form? Or is it a residential space that requires a cosy vibe?
"Additionally, consider the size and layout of the space. Certain lighting designs can help open up a room and make it appear larger, while others may create a more intimate and enclosed aesthetic," says Bosco.
Once you know the purpose of the space, figure out the colour temperature and lighting intensity. Bosco explains that linear extrusion lighting can highlight specific architectural features or bring additional depth to a room by lighting up specific areas.
"Different colour temperatures and intensities can evoke various emotions and enhance the overall ambience. Whether it's opening up a space to make it feel more expansive or creating a cosy and intimate atmosphere, extrusion lighting offers endless possibilities for transforming environments," he says.
"Our extrusion lighting products can be tailored in terms of colour temperature, fitting colours, high colour rendering index, and dimming capabilities to achieve the desired lighting effects."
There are three options for lighting colour temperatures: warm white, neutral white and cool white. Each type can produce a different kind of mood.
For example, warm white lighting is ideal for intimate atmospheres. Popular areas would be the dining room, bedroom and living room. Meanwhile, cool white lighting is well-suited for task-oriented areas, such as workspaces, garages, or laundry rooms, where visibility and focus are important.
Neutral white lighting falls in between warm and cool lighting, striking a balance that closely resembles natural daylight. This lighting temperature is highly versatile and well-suited for a variety of spaces throughout your home, including offices, kitchens, and bathrooms.
Ultimately, the best lighting choice for your home depends on your personal taste, the function of the room, and the desired ambiance you wish to create.
While LED in linear extrusion lighting offers many advantages, from being highly energy efficient to producing a smaller carbon footprint, Bosco advises being mindful of the room's temperature. This is especially true if the room receives plenty of natural light and heat in the summer or if you live in humid areas.
"It's essential to avoid exposing the lighting to extreme temperatures or excessive moisture. In wet environments, it's recommended to use IP65-rated products and ensure that waterproof sealing is done correctly on site to prevent any water damage," he advises.
Lighting has the power to make or break the mood of a space. As such, Bosco advises always seeking expert advice before purchasing linear extrusion lighting.
"Look for certifications and warranties that guarantee the performance and longevity of the products. Consider the compatibility and ease of installation of the lighting system, too. As for red flags, be cautious of suspiciously low prices, which may indicate subpar quality or unreliable customer service."
