Doors are a functional and necessary aspect of every home. But door handles are often an afterthought, despite their ability to instantly enhance the aesthetics of any space.
Hardware specialists Spark & Burnish have recently undergone a makeover with different ownership and updated product offerings. Co-owner Claire Onuorah tells us about the brand's exclusive collection, Maison Vervloet, and how each design can elevate your home's style.
Spark & Burnish is a supplier of luxury door and cabinet hardware for the design conscious. With a background in architecture, Claire says providing beautiful designs, stunning finishes and exquisite craftsmanship are at the forefront of the business.
It is also the exclusive Australian supplier of Maison Vervloet. With a thoughtful and responsive design approach, Maison Vervloet creates original hardware conceived by international designers and architects.
The Ballet collection pays homage to the traditional design of lever-style door handles. As the name suggests, it personifies the dynamic nature of dance and is well suited for modular-style homes that hero structural clean lines and minimalist design.
"[Ballet] embodies a kind of tension, both frivolous and disciplined simultaneously. As with all Maison Vervloet hardware, finishes may be customised in various living and frozen finishes as required," Claire explains.
The designer, Stijn D'hondt, combines the craftsmanship techniques he learned from his grandfather with a vision of functionality and sustainability.
The Jules collection expresses both sensuality and character with its deep brown finish. Featuring subtle curves and ergonomic shaping, its elegant structure pairs perfectly with contemporary homes that spotlight modern design. Claire describes this collection as "a personal favourite".
"[Jules] exhibits the calmness and textural sensuality that architect Vincent Van Duysen is famous for. The custom 'Jules' finish is rich without being showy. This timeless range sits equally well in a contemporary space as it would in a heritage context," she says.
Belgian-based designer Vincent Van Duysen is renowned for his fusions of tactile materials with timeless design. Paying respect to context and tradition, his creations emphasise functionality, durability and comfort.
The Phyllibert collection takes inspiration from Phyllidae, an insect that uses camouflage to appear as a leaf. The hardware mimics the insect's appearance when walking, its body gently rocking back and forth like a leaf blowing in the wind.
Claire describes this design as a "poetic and playful collection". It complements homes with a natural aesthetic and is reminiscent of a heritage refurbishment.
"The subtle organic shape possesses a beautiful lightness and feels lovely to the hand."
Designer Jean-François D'Or is known for his unique designs. Voted Belgian designer of the year in 2013, he focuses on creating simple, logical objects that add subtle style to any door.
Featuring elegant curves, the Torna collection looks different from every angle. This door handle can be customised with inlays like genuine leather, colourful python or exotic wood veneer.
"What interests us most about this collection is that the choice of base finish and inlay completely changes the hardware's character. It may present as masculine when crafted from oil-rubbed bronze and leather, or feminine when crafted from brass and delicate wood veneer," Claire explains.
Nedda El-Asmar, the brains behind Studio Nedda, expresses openness, flexibility and diversity throughout her thoughtful designs. Mixing classical elegance and a modern approach, the result is hardware that encapsulates originality, tradition and innovation.
