To use less products in lighting design will lower power consumption and in turn carbon emissions, reduce upfront installation costs and ongoing maintenance costs. If designed well, provide a more comfortable space.
Over the last couple of decades we have littered ceiling lines with narrow beamed and intense lighting such as downlights, extruded, strip linear lighting coupled with ineffective feature lighting. It has not been uncommon for homes to have 150+ downlights installed (10Wea= 15KW). By choosing products that have wider beams with reduce the amount of lighting needed. read more
A 6x3m room will commonly have 2 rows of 3 downlights in a neat grid system. Generally homes use 10W - 12W downlights so this equates to 6x10W ea =60W. If I selected an opal glass pendant with a 12W LED lamp in the same room, I would have 180° Beam of light thrown within the room providing upward lighting, reflected light off the walls and direct lighting and save 48W of power.
Checking lighting suppliers polar curves that display the lighting performs in beam spread is a good way to ascertain the efficiency of a product. With decorative products, choosing lighting products that allow the light source to throw lighting to the side and above the product is excellent. Having products that only throw lighting down, creates a mushroom effect where no ceilings are illuminated and in some cases no walls. Reflected light from ceiling and walls is visually more comfortable. After all, our aim is to create beautiful and comfortable spaces that people want to live, work and play in happily.
Good planning and product selection can provide well illuminated spaces with fewer products. The LEY with sheilded Lens optics can be spaced over 3m apart while still providing uniform lighting. The Tiar linear downlight with LED-LENs optics offers medium wide angle beam with even comfortable illumination.
