If you’re concerned about the security of your most treasured objects or important documents, a safe is the key to putting your mind at ease.

Most of us are familiar with the concept of a safe. Strong, sturdy and offering protection against the malicious intentions of would-be thieves, a safe can be hidden somewhere within your home and protect your most beloved possessions. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, around 3.5% of Australian households experienced a break-in, or attempted break-in, in the year 2020 to 2021.

This study found the most common items stolen during break-ins are jewellery, money, wallets, tools and sporting equipment. Despite this knowledge, very few of us invest the time and money into having the right safe for our purposes professionally installed into our homes - but we should. Ben Tang, technical product specialist for residential at ASSA ABLOY Australia, shares the reasons why you should install a safe in your home.

Protect your valuables
Should your home become one of the unlucky few that experience a break-in, you want to minimise what a thief can steal. “A safe provides secure storage for valuable items such as jewellery, cash, important documents, and other items that need to be protected from theft or damage,” says Ben.

Ensure confidentiality
If you store sensitive or confidential information at home, it’s essential that you prevent that information from falling into the wrong hands, particularly if that information relates to finances. “A safe can be used to store confidential information, such as financial records, medical records and business secrets to prevent unauthorised access to this information,” says Ben.

Protect firearms
Depending on what state you live in, having a safe installed in your home in which to store a firearm is a legal requirement. “For those who own firearms, a safe provides a secure and responsible way to store the firearm, while preventing access to it by children or unauthorised individuals,” says Ben.

Preserve important documents
The Climate Council reports that Australia is experiencing an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, bush fires and other such similar events. Should your home be positioned in a vulnerable area, a safe can provide important documents or digital files with an extra level of protection against the elements. “A safe can be used to store important documents such as passports, wills and deeds to protect them from fire, water damage and other natural disasters,” says Ben.

Peace of mind
If you and your family are often away from home, you travel frequently or often engage the services of cleaners, house- or pet-sitters, a safe can provide with you peace of mind that your most important documents and objects are safe. “Knowing that your valuables and important items are stored in a secure location can give you peace of mind and reduce stress, especially in the event of a break-in or disaster,” says Ben.
