Major Renovation and Extension in Albert Park

A demolition and custom renovation on this once small cottage in Albert Park, Melbourne added natural light and versatile living spaces, resulting in a modern, dramatic makeover.

Spacemaker Home Extensions was tasked with giving this 130-year-old cottage a transformation for returning clients, who were downsizing from a big suburban home to a relaxed and airy living space in Albert Park. The 19th century cottage measured just six metres in width with dwellings on either side, so this project demanded creative and masterful design and construction solutions.

Within 36 weeks, the Spacemaker team undertook a major demolition, renovation and extensions to the cottage, transforming it from a one-storey 98 m² dwelling into a two-storey home, with 115 m² of ground floor space, a 33 m² upper floor, and a 16 m² terrace. From only two remaining front rooms, this beautiful home now contains three bedrooms, a hide-away study, integrated indoor and outdoor areas, and plenty of storage space.

The vision that the clients had for their home included a design with easy bike storage, plus enough space to comfortably accommodate their adult children and guests when staying over—all of which were seamlessly met. To make the home more light and airy, a central light court was added. All the major rooms in the home now have access to the natural light that floods in, and a garden aspect.

As the owners of a personalised, contemporary abode that ticks all the boxes, the clients couldn’t be more pleased. This project is their third build with Spacemaker Home Extensions.
