Project Overview & Scope

TEC worked alongside Heatwave Mechanical as structural engineering partner on a rolling programme of MEP support packages across Auckland City Hospital and Starship Children’s Hospital. The collaboration began with a single steel support frame in a Starship basement plantroom and has since grown to more than a dozen separate scopes — covering concrete plinths and anchorages for boilers, air handling units, pumps and tanks; a steel frame for chilled water coils; access ladders, handrails and hatches; a new concrete louvre nib; temporary AHU supports on the Level 8 roof terrace; and seismic restraints for suspended ducting and pipework across the campus.

Challenges

All work was carried out within a live, fully operational IL4 hospital, where patient care continued around every work front and disruption had to be minimised. Each scope required a tailored approach to existing structure that varied across the campus, often with limited information on what lay behind walls, floors and ceilings. Coordinating a steady stream of individual packages — each on its own timeline — while maintaining a consistent engineering approach across the programme added a further layer of complexity.

Outcomes & Value Add

A shared understanding of the existing building and a consistent design approach allowed TEC and Heatwave to move quickly and confidently across every scope. Working as a

trusted partnership meant new packages could be picked up with minimal lead-in, keeping the wider mechanical programme on track. What began as a one-off support frame has grown into an ongoing collaboration spanning more than a dozen packages — a direct result of the consistency, responsiveness, and practical engineering input TEC brought to a complex live hospital environment.
