Residential multiple housing award 2008

Drew was personally contacted in 2006 by Macquarie Builders who were project managing the development of historic warehouses in the Salamanca Precinct. Macquarie Builders required the expertise Drew had gained working on many complex and commercial  projects; to manage client expectations and maximise potential without this being lost to technical or authority concerns. Understanding the focus and support needed for such a project, it was introduced to the office of Heffernan Button Voss Architects.

Two loft apartments, roof top access and office spaces were introduced between the heritage warehouses and quarry face. The apartments captured all requirements for contemporary living whilst being sensitive to the existing stone and timber structures. Due to the structural system employed the busy and popular restaurant below, traded throughout the construction above.

A further two apartments were accommodated within the stone and timber warehouses fronting Salamanca Place. With two floors of restaurant below the apartments  careful consideration was required to provide these with adequate levels of fire protection without destroying heritage timbers. Safe egress was masterfully provided between the restaurant to Salamanca Place all with the full support of heritage authorities. Contemporary needs and spaces provided within these two apartments were provided in a way that enhanced the fabric and warehouse experience at all times.

Award by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects 2008.
