A local kindergarten with a focus on nature play to inspire the next generation.

A local kindergarten wanted to update their outdoor spaces and create endless opportunities for imaginative nature -based play. Two distinct outdoor spaces have been redesigned to increase accessibility and reflect the values of the kindergarten centre.

The North Yard has a new productive vegetable garden area with tactile paving, repaired retaining around a large existing tree, and a new waterplay area using captured rainwater. We also designed custom timber playground equipment which may be added at a later stage. The all-indigenous planting palette has a strong focus on bush-foods and is hardy and resilient to tolerate the environmental conditions (many small children).

In the South Yard, a new vegetable garden with tactile paving and water play area are being added. A subsiding ramp has been replaced with stairs, making use of the recycled timber on site and another deck is being added to increase the versatility of an otherwise unusable space. A scramble net and ladder will be added to the sandpit at a later date to add a fun way of accessing the top level of the terraced site. Of course, when designing play spaces for children, there are a lot of safety concerns, but we haven’t forgotten about the important things. We’ve also made sure to include ramps for toy trucks, sound play and quiet spaces for reading in our designs.
