A tool shed turned into a retreat, camouflages itself within its surrounding landscape built to withstand bushfire conditions.

As architects, we transformed our client’s existing tool shed into a retreat after having already refurbished their coastal home on the same block.

The client’s brief called for a balance between functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal, including designated storage, working, and living areas.

Our design approach seamlessly combined practicality and attractiveness. On the ground level, we incorporated storage for tools, sports gear, and accessories, along with a workbench and an attached carport with space for two cars. The use of exposed raw materials and industrial finishes was consistent throughout the space.

The timber-panelled staircase led up to the upper level, which was designed to feel warm and welcoming. Custom cabinetry and timber accents added richness, while strategically placed windows captured the surrounding landscape. The design concept prioritized versatility, allowing the space to be opened or closed as needed.

To create a relaxed ambiance, we used a combination of raw materials such as concrete and natural timber, paired with contemporary choices like Perspex and carpet tiles made from recycled materials. The result was a sturdy, homely vibe with warmth and richness in the timber linings both internally and externally.

The design and construction of the studio were subject to strict bushfire regulations due to the delicate and fire-prone nature of the surrounding landscape.

Our team selected timber windows and external cladding that could perform well under bushfire conditions. The project has been transformed into an integral part of the client’s holiday home, a retreat perfect for work and play. Our team enjoyed, delivering a space that combines practicality and beauty while meeting our client’s specific needs.
