A sleek modern kitchen designed within a 1960s townhouse, featuring stainless steel finishes, improved workflow, and a blend of contemporary and retro elements for a functional and inviting space.
This kitchen was designed to fit into an existing townhouse that has a distinctly 1960’s aesthetic.
The owner requested a sleek modern kitchen, with stainless steel benchtop preferred. Improved workflow in main kitchen and into panty, and a bi-fold window above sink out to the courtyard were also asked for.
The question was asked… Do I keep the Archways? We said yes, keep them. Give them room to stand out as a feature.
The fridge was moved from the back wall and the oven raised to waist level. Both are now housed in tall white cabinets opposite the sink. The hob and sink each occupy one arm of the L-shape stainless steel benchtop that now flows from the entry, through into the pantry.
The full stainless steel fit out in the pantry, with concealed lighting, adds another dimension, giving a slightly commercial feel to the space. Pantry storage and worktop area was enhanced through the use of under bench cupboards and matching stainless steel open shelving.
The stark mix of the black and the white gloss cabinetry with integrated appliances, handless drawers and an ultra-thin stainless bench edge, make for clean lines and an contemporary look, whilst the diamond-patterned ceramic tiles on the splashback add some textural interest, and are a nod to the townhouse’s 1960 aesthetic. The same tiling was used on a wall in the dining room, visually connecting the two spaces.
The workflow and the balance of the kitchen are now much improved, perfectly suiting the client’s needs. The result is a super-functional and inviting place to be.
