A thoughtfully designed home overlooking Sumner surf, featuring multi-generational living spaces inspired by the beauty of beach walks and the natural elements of driftwood, stone, and metal.
A home overlooking the Sumner surf. The client wanted a home that makes the most of its very special location. The brief included the need to plan for the future, with an option for multi-generational use over the two levels. The first floor is dedicated to the clients living and sleeping and the ground floor for utility spaces and accommodation for visiting family. The brief talked about the joy of beach walking and surfing. This created the inspiration of The Driftwood Home, which has been referenced throughout the architecture of the home through the cladding types and location, including timber, stone and metal. These reference a charred piece of driftwood found on one of the clients many beach walks. The form of the home, a result of the desire to engage with the beach from most internal spaces, gave articulation to the Western façade.
