ArtMade was approached by a family to design a home tailored and specific to the family and the site.

The residence has consciously been zoned to have level 1 dedicated to the "parents" ie main bedroom suite and home office, and ground level dedicated to 'public' spaces ie the living, dining and kitchen. Also located on the ground level are the guest & children's bedrooms. The guest bedroom has been located to enjoy visual connection to the existing swimming pool whilst the children's bedrooms are equipped with their own study and ensuite that has direct access to landscaped front yards.

The form of the house comprises two gable roofs which reflect the zones proposed. The solid mass provides required visual privacy to the bedrooms whilst the transparent form provides visual connection between indoor and outdoor. The glazed spaces have been screened to provide protection during the warmer seasons.

Looking at spatial design, the quality of the space reflects the function. The living space where the family gathers is situated by the pool appreciating the double height ceiling. Other areas such as the laundry and bathrooms have been restricted to standard ceiling heights. Further enhancing the quality of the living space, solar has been carefully considered.

Being a corner site, the living space has been positioned South & West with high level North facing windows allowing additional light whilst maintaining privacy.

Throughout the spaces, key attention has been given to provide visual connections to outdoor natural elements. In particular, the living room is connected to the outdoors on 4 sides; landscaping on two ends, a decked area at level 1 on the third end, and the sky through the skylight on the fourth end. The main suite has its own private courtyard and glazing that frames Chatswood city skyline. Through an internal window over the living, the pool is also visible in this space.

The interiors have been designed not only to homogeneously fit in but to enhance the spatial quality. Horizontal timber elements at level 1 have been expressed to accentuate and contrast the double height scale. Concrete and timber have been chosen as material palette to provide luxuriousness and warmth.
