The Future Focus Early Learning Centre project was created in response to the increasing subdivision development of Papamoa and the demand for high quality early childhood facilities in the region. The client had a vision for a centre that would provide a nurturing and inspiring environment, where they could support and enrich the learning and growth of the children.
The building was designed to have a domestic aesthetic and to blend in with the surrounding residential area, while remaining practical for the number of children the centre was to accommodate. It featured a double height gable central circulation spine, with simple rectilinear box forms on either side containing the learning and amenity spaces. This spine created a secure entry and exit point for the staff and children and was designed to be a space for people to pause, converse and exchange information within the community.
The Future Focus Early Learning Centre, completed in 2023, is a contemporary building that will be a key contributor to the community of Papamoa. It will reflect the environment of a child’s world, whilst providing an inspiring and light-filled space that will enrich the wellbeing of all who visit.

Dickson Lonergan Architects (DLA) was founded in Whanganui in 1974 with founding partners Bruce Dickson (retired) and the late Barry Lonergan. Once fully established in the Whanganui region, DLA then started to expand the business, first into Wellington in 1999 with Barry and Glenn starting up the capital city office. Then came the Timaru Office headed up by Murray Ackroyd in 2005 and the further expansion to Hamilton in 2010 with Martin Swann.
The opportunity then arose to open an Auckland office in 2015 with Alana moving north from Wellington. Now with 5 offices, DLA has evolved from its humble beginnings into a nationwide practice, with a passionate team of architects and designers who specialise in all fields from commercial, residential, industrial, interiors, education and public projects through to DLA’s main stay of large scale dairy and food processing architecture.
