Steeped in history, Rugby Park is an iconic Christchurch sports venue. It is home to the Crusaders and houses the offices of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union.
Like many parts of Canterbury the site is located in an area affected by liquefiable soils with a shallow ground water depth. EDC quickly identified that the proposed long building structures could be prone to differential soil settlements.
With this in mind, EDC undertook a thorough geotechnical investigation of the grounds. As a multi-discipline engineering practice, EDC were able draw on a vast amount of engineering experience, enabling them to work collaboratively and proactively with the design team and contractors throughout the build.
To avoid excavation into the ground water table, EDC designed a shallow ground improvement that ensured robustness and buildability. With such a high profile client, EDC were on hand throughout this crucial stage of the development, supervising and monitoring the earth works. With attention to detail, the foundations were soon set for this first class venue; ready for the next installment of Rugby Park’s history.
