By Hughes Bruce Australia Pty Ltd
Kogarah Council selected Hughesbruce, the preferred tenderer out of eight, to design and manage the interior development of their new $2 Million Library and Cultural Centre. They were selected for their list of many blue chip credits, sensible balance between the designed environment, allocated budget and future maintenance practicalities.
The new building was located in the new town square site that won an award for a world first in sustainability and it gave Hughesbruce a wonderful platform to create an environment that would serve the Kogarah community through the ages.
The building was a 2 x level concrete and brick shell providing a great platform for creativity and new design solutions. Hughesbruce designed the library and community facilities over the 2 levels incorporating a welcoming stair that fans out greeting the lower floor, quiet rooms, collaborative spaces, administration areas and library.
Hughesbruce presented at council meetings for all members to be informed of concepts, recommendations and progress, and these meetings were often political in nature and presented challenges for presenting solutions. The outcomes were very well received and Hughesbruce’s name is etched in the building plaque unveiled at the opening celebrations.
