The brief was clear: we want to build a cool pad that people will enjoy all year round in the beautiful surroundings of the Central Plateau. The site is located within an area that has a lot of holiday homes. Outlook from the deck towards the mountain was a must! The small 411m² section, position of the driveway and outlook to the mountain determined most of the floor plan. Shelter from the prevailing wind from the West and outlook to the mountain, created a logic recessed covered deck area to enjoy the view and morning sun. The compact design (91m² in total) houses 2 bedrooms, although small, sizing was not important (you only want a place to put your head down....), open plan living-dining-kitchen and a small office.. A lockable storage and covered area around the entry door are a must to protect yourself from the elements when needed. The usage of the low maintenance materials was important from the outset. Heartwood Macrocarpa has been used for trims and some exterior cladding. On the interior the timber is used in features to reflect the outside. A raking ceiling in the lounge will guide you to a stunning view of a snowy peak of Mt Ruapehu which has been framed with large windows and doors, that let in plenty of natural light. Low energy using equipment and LED lighting has been used to counteract the ridiculous energy scheme from the local Lines Company. Gas cooking and hot water and an ambient gas fireplace is part of this energy conservation method as well.
