Duin-Plan

The client's long, narrow section is nestled in an established part of a beach town. The existing house was beyond repair and not fit for purpose. The new house has to give the client and her disabled son a seamless indoor - outdoor flow. Easy access everywhere was the main brief. This design delivers a connection to the outdoors from anywhere in the house - a white sanctuary merges with a green oasis. Most of the house is hidden from the street view, hiding behind the garage and entry door, with only a few peaks of roof revealing the secret behind the facade. We have designed a string of separate pods for living, connected indoors by an open living / dining and kitchen space and outdoor rooms and pool are connected by decks. The bedrooms for mother and son are placed the furthest away from the street and are private areas but close together. Guest bedroom and bathroom are on the other side of the house for privacy, the main living space acts as a buffer. The cladding of the house is a combination of vertical, white boards that reflect the beach life, and warm tinted vertical larch shiplap weatherboards to soften the exterior and merge into garden life. The different pods all have differently angled roofs so that they’re identifiable as separate entities, but strung together as one house. The placing of the windows and doors was a crucial part of the design. We had to create a light home with many views and connections to the garden, but never overheating on the predominantly northwestern facade.
