Petone

Renovating and extending a character home in Petone to enjoy the benefits of modern living in a peaceful beach-side area. CLIENT JAMES & LUCY MITCHELL ARCHITECT MOORE DESIGN Overview The clients, James and Lucy Mitchell, were eager to see their charming character home evolve to provide modern comfort, with a full renovation and open plan living extension. With a renovated kitchen, scullery, outdoor deck, and modern bathrooms, their cosy beachside home was updated with an innovative, modern design. Challenges One thing our clients were adamant about was to preserve the unique character of their old property. The project outlined a need to blend modern design with traditional styling to maintain the heritage of their residence. The planned extension to implement open plan living, removing barriers that some older houses included by necessity with modern building practices. The renovation required a complete updating of several rooms to provide modern comfort; the kitchen, scullery, bathrooms, and a tasteful outdoor entertaining area. Solutions To produce the desired atmosphere in the open plan living design, we included timber trusses with skylights bring a glut of natural light to interior of the property. The incorporation of timber flooring transitioning from old to new through the house, and feature paneling along the hallway connected both the traditional style to the modern interior, and also the outdoor entertainment space to the open plan living area. Our passion for innovation and collaboration helped us build out the perfect indoor area for our clients, providing a sense of spaciousness and flow in their living area, and a satisfaction in the traditional styling remaining present in the finished timber weatherboard exterior. Outcome The finished renovation and extension left our clients familiar Petone residence feeling modernised, comfortable, and spacious. The open plan living interior into outdoor entertaining space flows perfectly, and their old home looks familiar, yet new.
