Small space design excites us, as there is nowhere to hide. Every detail counts and this courtyard garden in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs is a shining example of that. The design did not need to be overly complex and its beauty is in its simplicity.

A light and textural material palette of strip-finished concrete, brick and timber provides the structure. The skill of the trades, attention to details and execution of the construction was essential to the project’s success. Subtle level changes were exploited to delineate spaces and create seating, cooking and entertaining opportunities. Curves were introduced into the concrete to provide a break from the straight lines that dominate the brick and timber.

Topiary and architectural plantings of the Japanese Black Pine, Buxus and Agave are offset with more relaxed cascading and succulent species. The inherent playfulness seen in the curves and cascading plants offers a sense of balance and relief from the more structured and formal elements. A mere 50m2 courtyard that provides so much amenity.

About the
Professional

Since the company’s formation in 2011, directors Matthew Hook & Trystan Graham have focused their attention on providing the residential landscape market with a high-end, all-inclusive landscape service. This concept to completion approach allows for a single point of contact for the entirety of the project, ensuring the design intent is delivered and maintained as the landscape is built and managed into the future.

Working closely and collaboratively with homeowners, architects and builders, Outdoor Establishments offers garden design & landscape architecture, landscape & swimming pool construction, and horticultural services.

Our team of architects, designers, landscapers, carpenters, stonemasons & horticulturists share the company’s passion for creating beautiful and functional landscapes. Open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are what allows Outdoor Establishments to foster a mutually beneficial relationship between our design, construction and maintenance teams. The strength of this relationship is reflected in the creativity, quality and longevity of our work, ensuring the best possible experience and results for our clients.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
