The project involved minor alterations and extensive additions to the existing two-storey home, including the sensitive refurbishment of a freestanding stables building. The architectural response introduces a two-storey rear addition that confidently contrasts the original structure while maintaining its sense of scale and dignity.
Material selection was key in bridging eras. Exposed red brick, bluestone and natural stone connect the new forms to the original fabric, while high-performance glazing and refined detailing bring in contemporary touches. The composition maintains a visually rich dialogue of old and new coexisting with equal presence.
Internally, the home’s planning was reimagined to suit contemporary living. A new family kitchen, dining and living zone forms the heart of the addition, opening generously to outdoor terraces and the garden. The once-formal layout now flows effortlessly between interior and exterior spaces, creating a sense of light, openness and connection.
Every element was designed for longevity and ease of use. The kitchen and butler’s pantry balance practicality with a quiet sense of luxury, while custom joinery and material detailing speak to the home’s crafted origins. Interiors maintain a palette that feels both contemporary and grounded with natural materials, timeless finishes, and generous natural light.
Carefully proportioned archways link the original Victorian residence with the new addition, creating a subtle architectural language. They frame views, guide movement, and mark transitions between old and new. The archways honour the heritage fabric while allowing the contemporary volumes to feel light, connected, and cohesive.
On the first floor, a roof terrace captures long views to the city skyline. This elevated space provides a calm retreat while visually linking the home to its urban context. It’s a gesture that transforms the upper level into a place of pause, reinforcing the project’s balance between outlook and enclosure.

The redesigned landscape unites the previously disconnected site. An in-ground pool and a series of outdoor living zones create layers of privacy and openness, extending the home’s use throughout the seasons. The integration of stone, planting and level changes ensures the garden feels established and connected to the architecture.
Selbourne exemplifies Bryant Alsop’s belief that architecture should be uplifting, beautiful and honest. The result is a home that honours its past while offering a vision for how heritage architecture can evolve to be timeless, functional, and connected to place.
