A versatile studio extension featuring a green roof and vertical gardens, providing a secluded oasis for work and relaxation in the heart of South Melbourne.

This studio with green roof and vertical gardens was realised while working at Kister Architects. It forms an extension to an already extended South Melbourne terrace house which was struggling with space. The studio will serve as workplace, guest room and break out space, all reached over the extended deck with well incorporated garden beds. While opening with its main windows back to the existing residence, it achieves to be a secluded oasis in the middle of a highly built up site.

“Alex was wonderful to work with. She went above and beyond at every step of the journey. While she is clearly a talented and experienced architect who listened to what we needed and was able to deliver the best outcome for our family, it was the project management and her constant desire to make things as easy as possible for us that really sets Alex above the rest. Our renovation was conducted during the height of the Melbourne lockdowns in 2020. As a working couple with 4 young kids who were all being home-schooled during this time, it was a very stressful period. Alex was a constant, calming presence who made the whole process go very smoothly. It is hard to imagine how we would have been able to make timely decisions, complete the house to our meet our requirements and get through this renovation without someone as skilled and human-centered as Alex.”
