With its Hanmer marble wall cladding and garden walls, this Kahu Rd house is regarded by many as a neighborhood landmark. Sadly this iconic period home did not escape the February 2011 earthquakes and EDC was commissioned to provide and oversee the repairs required to return this home to its former glory and status.
Although recoverable, the damage to the ground storey marble cladding was terminal, but first it had to be demolished in order to be re-constructed. For this to happen, the top storey had to be lifted, removed and temporarily stored.
Even for EDC’s Christchurch office, who are well versed in earthquake remediation, re-strengthening and reinstatement, this was one out of the bag! The first step was to specify temporary strengthening to ensure the upper storey structure could withstand the lift, then with the help of some calm weather, an expert team of house lifters with access to millions of dollars’ worth of specialised equipment, the lift was completed successfully.
Now that the ground floor structure has been reinstated, the process has been reversed and the top floor returned. The long process of re-cladding has begun in earnest and soon this grand old lady will be standing proud once more.
