Design Partnership drew inspiration from African heritage to create the Meat & Wine restaurant chain. Each location is uniquely Australian while incorporating elements of traditional African architecture and expressive pattern making. The concept of Ubuntu, which emphasizes giving and sharing, is embodied in each store. The Meat & Wine Canberra location, for example, draws inspiration from the act of storytelling around a central point where people gather to listen.

In African cultures, storytelling is used to teach important life lessons, entertain, and invite people to participate in significant moments. Similarly, successful restaurants are places for socializing, telling fascinating stories, and entertaining guests. The central island or Boma interpretation in the middle of each Meat & Wine location is designed to create a sense of enclosure, much like the traditional African Lapa or Boma. The inward-facing bench seat, or "Shongololo," wraps around the base of the Boma, and the golden crown above is made from individual handcrafted cloths by African artisans. Each golden fabric piece represents a single moment, but when combined, they create a rich tapestry that tells a deep and meaningful story.

About the
Professional

Our studio specializes in design for behaviour.

We have done so for almost 30 years and in this time we have learned a tremendous amount about how people behave naturally and instinctively within these social environments. We have learned the hard way that in order to design successful venues, we needed to place predictive human behaviour at the heart of what we do. We capture succinctly how most people behave most of the time in order to design spaces for the most joy and ultimately the most success. This assists us in capturing the spirit of place.

At ArchiPro we recognise and acknowledge the existing, original and ancient connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to the lands and waterways across the Australian continent. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We commit to working together to build a prosperous and inclusive Australia.
