Grounded in place and shaped by restraint
Set within a rare sheltered bush clearing in Ōmokoroa, this home is shaped by a quiet interplay between grounded and elevated forms. Carefully positioned within the landscape, the composition is defined by two contrasting volumes, a solid rendered wing anchored to the earth, and a darker timber structure that extends lightly above the native planting below.
Designed in close collaboration with the clients, the home prioritises comfort, longevity and a strong connection to its surroundings. Arrival is deliberately restrained, with a winding approach through water, planting and filtered views gradually revealing the architecture within the clearing.
Material selection responds directly to the coastal environment, balancing durability with warmth and tactility. Externally, Shou Sugi Ban cladding is paired with a lighter rendered form, reinforcing the legibility of the two volumes while providing resilience against salt-laden air. Internally, a restrained palette of timber, stone and muted finishes creates a calm and cohesive environment designed to age gracefully over time.
Sustainability was approached through long-term stewardship of both the site and the experience of living within it. Portions of the home are elevated on driven piles to minimise disturbance to the landscape and allow natural systems to continue beneath. Passive design principles, solar generation, rainwater collection and efficient mechanical systems support a high level of self-sufficiency and year-round comfort.
The result is a home defined not by excess, but by clarity, restraint and a deep responsiveness to place.
