A beautifully integrated kitchen featuring an adjustable timber benchtop, plywood cabinetry, and a striking sliding roller door, designed to harmonize with a 1970s architecturally styled home while providing functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The key priority for this kitchen was fitting in with the 1970’s architecturally designed house; the bush setting and the raked ceiling at 4800mm with interior timber panelling. Having seen a custom plywood fitout, our clients were keen to use plywood for its aesthetics and robustness. Our clients were searching for a unique design to suit their unique house.  Other key priorities included a functional, minimalist design, open shelf pantry and plenty of bench space. Upon seeing our adjustable workbench, an adjustable bench top was included in the brief.

The final result is a gorgeous kitchen that fits so well with the house it looks like it has always been there.  The recycled brushbox timber bench top sits on an electric adjustable base, with a discreet switch for easily adjusting the bench top height.  The plywood cabinetry and Tasmanian Oak doors and drawers ensure the kitchen is strong, durable and sustainable.  The wall cabinetry follows the line of the ceiling and a plethora of LED lighting provides both practical and aesthetic lighting.  And the custom stainless steel sink with inset compost bin  provides a seamless and practical washing up area where chopping boards sit upon the sink for ease of chopping and washing.  Drawer after drawer provide practical and easy storage. And the sliding roller door adds a piece of art to the kitchen.

Adjustable Bench Top

What do you do when the main occupants in the house are different heights and enough that a fixed bench top height is difficult to navigate? Install an adjustable height bench top of course!  A small switch is discretely located on the left hand side of the bench and easily and effortlessly changes the bench top height.  There are preset heights or the bench can be adjusted as needed.

Feature Sliding Roller Door

The feature sliding roller door adds pop and a piece of art to the kitchen.  Three different types of green glass, cut in organic shapes with a shaped Tasmanian Oak frame.  The different types of glass also have different textures to them.  And the glass is laminated for safety.  The door leads into the storeroom where there the ovens are located and shelving for pantry items.

Custom Stainless Steel Bench

Stainless steel benches are tough and long lasting. This custom made stainless steel bench includes two bowls, steps to hold chopping boards, an inset compost bucket and also mirrors the curve of the brushbox timber bench top. There are no joins.

The Details

  • Finger jointed, solid timber drawers for solidity and durability – this cutlery drawer will stand the test of time!
  • Mitred plywood cabinetry
  • Drawers, drawers and more drawers for storage
  • Careful plumbing allows for drawers under the sink
  • LED lights for good kitchen lighting and ambient lighting on separate switching
  • Blum drawer runners and hinges with a lifetime warranty

This kitchen delivers on practicality and aesthetics. The adjustable bench top provides an ergonomic surface for any sized user and any job.  The plethora of drawers and store room shelving provide practical storage. The compost bin and stainless steel bench top with chopping boards means preparation is a a breeze. And at night, the ambient lighting highlights the kitchen art in the sliding glass door and the glass art collection placed above the kitchen cupboards. And the sliding roller door provides a delightful feature in both daylight and at night.

“We purchased our house about two years ago. It had an old small basic white melamine kitchen with lovely angled windows that caught the natural light. The cupboards included corner cupboards, you know, the ones that waste space at the back. We needed a new kitchen! We contacted Select Custom Joinery for a quotation, we wanted something different. Gino Monteleone visited, measured and discussed what we would like in a kitchen and how we use it. He suggested a curved design. The final design was a curve and fabrication began. Almost all the drawers are curved including the built-in dishwasher’s front panel. Finger joints in the drawers create a lovely contrast to the ends of the plywood panels of the cabinets. The simplicity of the contoured cutouts for the drawer pulls provides a very pleasant tactile finish when opening them. The main benchtop is a curved lamination of red-coloured recycled hardwood that incorporates the sink. The new pantry is a singularly beautiful piece of furniture with frosted glass doors providing ample storage and thoughtful separation between the kitchen and the living room. Our kitchen is a beautiful piece of very functional furniture. It is built to an extraordinarily high standard using sustainable materials including the plywood for the cabinets and full-length draws, that are lined with Marmoleum and benchtops made from laminated recycled hardwood and plywood. Many small touches add to the pleasing aesthetic such as the simple curved shelves of the rangehood covering, a small set of wall-mounted decorative cabinets to the right of the sink and the curve reflected in tiles on the approach to the kitchen that completes the space. It is a joy to prepare and cook meals in this kitchen and the “wow factor” when we have visitors brings us great pride. Our new kitchen is a credit to Gino, his design and making skills and all his staff who assisted, Tom, Griffin and Robyn. I would also like to thank the additional tradespeople, the tilers, electricians and plumbers who, coordinated by Gino, assisted to finish our kitchen in a very timely manner. Thank you all we are exceptionally happy with our extraordinary, bespoke kitchen.”
